The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for widespread rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, raising concerns about potential flooding and landslides in the state. The forecast, effective through August 6, 2025, predicts heavy to very heavy showers in districts such as Tawang, West Kameng, East Kameng, Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, Kamle, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, and Upper Subansiri, with isolated areas likely to experience intense downpours.
The IMD attributes the severe weather to a cyclonic circulation over Assam and a low-pressure area near north Odisha, which are driving moisture-laden monsoon winds into the region. Authorities have placed landslide-prone areas on high alert, urging residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay updated with local weather advisories. The state’s hilly terrain, combined with recent rainfall deficits of 44% from June to July 2025, heightens the risk of flash floods and soil erosion.
This comes after a challenging monsoon season, with earlier floods affecting over 33,000 people across 24 districts, claiming 12 lives, and damaging infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and water supply systems. The state administration is closely monitoring river levels and has deployed disaster response teams to mitigate potential impacts. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially in low-lying and vulnerable zones, as the region prepares for another spell of relentless rain.
