Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has called for a renewed focus on preserving and showcasing the state’s unique cultural identity on the global stage, emphasizing the protections granted under Article 371A of the Indian Constitution. Speaking at a special event titled “Nagaland’s Global Footprints: Cultural Diplomacy and International Engagements” in Kohima, Rio highlighted the importance of leveraging the state’s distinct heritage, safeguarded by Article 371A, which ensures autonomy over Naga customs, land, and traditions.
The event celebrated the success of Rio’s recent international visits to Russia and Japan from July 10 to 17, 2025, accompanied by Naga artists and officials from the Tourism and Industries departments. Nagaland was among six Indian states invited by the Ministry of External Affairs to participate in global cultural engagements. A Naga cultural troupe performed at the Bharat Utsav – Festival of India in Moscow, earning accolades from Russian authorities for their representation of Nagaland’s rich traditions. Certificates of appreciation from the Russian Embassy were presented to the performers during the Kohima event.
Rio also launched “Treekam,” an international music collaboration album cover, overseen by producer Arpito Gope, further showcasing Nagaland’s artistic talent. He emphasized that these efforts not only promote Naga culture but also foster global awareness of Northeast India’s diversity. The Chief Minister signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during his visits and represented Nagaland at the World Expo Osaka, reinforcing the state’s growing global presence.
“Nagaland’s identity is our strength. Article 371A is a unique privilege that protects our way of life, and we must share this heritage with pride,” Rio said, urging citizens to value and promote their cultural legacy. This initiative aligns with Nagaland’s broader vision of cultural diplomacy and sustainable development through international collaboration.
