Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam on September 8, 2025, to inaugurate India’s pioneering bamboo-based bio-ethanol plant in Numaligarh, Golaghat district, and kick off the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The bio-refinery, established by Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) at a cost of ₹4,200 crore, is a landmark in India’s green energy sector, producing 49,000 tonnes of ethanol annually from 300,000 tonnes of bamboo feedstock. This joint venture with Finnish firms Fortum and Chempolis Oy will also yield value-added chemicals, boosting sustainable industrial growth and rural employment.
During the visit, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for the ₹7,500 crore Guwahati Ring Road project, including a Brahmaputra bridge connecting Narengi and Kuruwa, and inaugurate the Mangaldoi Medical College Hospital in Darrang district. The evening will feature the grand launch of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary celebrations in Guwahati, with 1,000 singers performing a 23-minute medley of his iconic songs. The state has invited 50 individuals per district associated with Hazarika, and a public registration portal is open until August 20 for attendees.
Sarma highlighted that these initiatives reflect Assam’s cultural pride and its strides toward sustainable development, with projects worth ₹1 lakh crore expected to take shape by December 2025. The visit underscores Assam’s growing role in India’s economic and cultural landscape.
